CAMEA: Transition to a Sustainable Packaging Solution
We designed a complete packaging solution based on the Myco 4Pack system
This solution consists of paper pillows filled with material made from organic waste (sawdust) overgrown with Reishi mushroom mycelium. This process binds the originally loose material together to form a biocomposite that can plastically deform, thereby providing the necessary protection against impacts and shocks.
These protective pillows, which replace the commonly used plastic foams, are applied to a custom-designed cardboard tray tailored to the product. As a result, the entire package is completely plastic-free, easy to store, easy to handle, and meets the client’s requirements for cleanliness and aesthetic appeal.
Thanks to the use of waste raw materials, low-energy production, and the smart design of the final packaging, the end solution is also cost-competitive compared to traditional options. This is true even for low production volumes, as Myco 4Pack features low prototyping costs and zero tooling cost.
Original solution
- Different solutions for different products
- Use of plastic (LDPE foam)
- In-house production (Cutting LDPE foam inserts with a water jet on-site,
requiring subsequent drying.)
Advantages of the new solution
- Local collaboration
- Complete custom packaging
- Outsourcing = labor savings and immediate availability
- Variability (combining inserts and boxes)
- Better protection, unified design, easier handling
- 100% eco-friendly solution
- Packaging for approximately 75% of products -> 100% by the end of 2025
Pilot project
Sensor for high-speed vehicle weighing.
- Labor and energy savings (previously in-house water jet cutting)
- Immediate availability of packaging (previously 2 days – cutting, drying, gluing)
- Significantly stronger boxes
- Reduction in fixing material volume by 20 %
Although the cost of the packaging itself remained at the same level, CAMEA now receives a complete package, saving on the labor previously used to produce plastic fillers.
