Myco 4Pack: Design of technical solutions

Boxes for construction product

Complex packaging solution combining cardboard with fixing and protective elements in the form of capsules made of Myco material (SafePads).

Protective corners for refurbished electronics

POČÍTÁRNA.CZ sells refurbished electronics. This means that they do not have original packaging for many products and so they use universal packaging materials including a lot of bubble wrap. Even so, they have still had to deal with damaged shipments, which is the worst thing from an environmental perspective. We developed a simple solution for them that reduced their shipping damage rate by 80%. At the same time, the corners have made it more successful for them to claim damaged shipments. The horns are assembled by TOMZA, a social enterprise employing people with disabilities.

Fixing and protective elements (Servisbal)

The fixing elements consist of two types of materials. The corrugated cardboard serves as a carrier and the paper-wrapped formwork from the soil as a shock absorber for possible shocks and falls that occur during transport. The paper-wrapped mycelium mouldings are glued to a corrugated board cross-section which contains ‘grooves’ along which the cardboard liner can be folded to adjust the shape of the product.

The mycelium shapes are glued onto corrugated cardboard liners, which are then folded back over the shapes so that the mycelium is covered by cardboard on both sides. This packaging element is then inserted into cardboard boxes to cover the bottom, top and sides of the packaging from the inside. Due to its insulating properties, the mycelium maintains a stable temperature inside the packaging for up to 48 hours (depending on the ambient temperature, of course). This is sufficient to keep, for example, refrigerated food at a constant temperature during transport. The corrugated cardboard then adds strength to the insulating liner and provides additional protection against damage to goods due to drops and impacts that occur during transport.
