This trend is driven by both legislation, particularly the EU regulation on packaging and packaging waste, and corporate social responsibility goals. Fungal mycelium-based packaging offers a solution, but its widespread adoption has so far been hindered by limitations in production efficiency.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myco.cz\/en\/\">MYCO<\/a> has perfected a manufacturing process that overcomes these barriers. Thanks to innovations, the company has transitioned from concept to industrial production. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Composition and principle of the composite<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The material is based on a composite consisting of two main components:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mycelium<\/strong> (mycelia): Functions as a natural, spontaneously growing binder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organic substrate<\/strong>: Consists of waste products from the agricultural and timber industries (e.g., sawdust, hemp shives) which contain lignin and cellulose and thus serve as filler and nutrient source for the mycelium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During cultivation, the mycelium permeates the substrate, creating a strong and lightweight fibrous network that gives the material the necessary mechanical properties, including shock-absorbing capability.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key phases and innovations in the manufacturing process<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The efficiency and scalability of MYCO&#8217;s process are based on the optimization of two production phases.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These enable large-scale production of Myco material and the filling of paper capsules for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myco.cz\/en\/myco-4pack-safepads\/\">MYCO 4Pack<\/a> packaging system, which received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.red-dot.org\/project\/myco-safepads-71492\">Red Dot Design<\/a> award for its functional design.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Substrate preparation and sterilization<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of this phase is to create an environment for mycelium growth. The original batch method, based on several hours of substrate steaming, was time- and energy-inefficient and significantly limited the continuity and overall capacity of the production process. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By introducing a <strong>continuous sterilization line<\/strong>, the sterilization time was reduced <strong>from hours to minutes<\/strong>. This led to a reduction in energy consumption, an increase in production capacity, and ensured a continuous flow of material to the next production phase. Sterilization is carried out by heat; no harmful chemicals are used in the production. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Substrate inoculation<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accurate mycelium dosing in the substrate is crucial for proper growth. Manual inoculation showed a high risk of contamination and uneven permeation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MYCO has implemented <strong>automated mycelium inoculation technology<\/strong>, which allows for precise and uniform dosing directly into the substrate within the production line. This reduces the risk of contamination and <strong>shortens the overall maturation time by up to 50 %<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The product forming itself is often the longest phase in competing technologies, taking days. MYCO has developed its own fast forming process that takes <strong>seconds<\/strong>. This process enables large-scale production of Myco material and the filling of paper capsules for the MYCO 4Pack packaging system, which received the Red Dot Design award for its functional design. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-qw.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcfh7QYjfEVgwCdcM6SUoScZNyt08rV02i7pAQ9wak-FBfxcpJB70zXyjWH1YZbi7F6Wz2h5PM9C2cNQCJLPU0z5sKBW0mtl4IktLvMyVdgAHIFlTIcNCvxraITiQYrHjZgjkJOYQ?key=_Rkj1TKzVyNYGWUyMw1jFQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental aspects of production<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resulting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myco.cz\/en\/technology\/\">production process<\/a> is designed with an emphasis on minimizing environmental impact. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Carbon footprint<\/strong>: CO\u2082 emissions in the &#8220;cradle-to-gate&#8221; cycle are even negative due to the binding of biogenic carbon in Myco material, amounting to approximately -1.35 kg of CO\u2082 per 1 kg of material. For comparison, the production of 1 kg of polystyrene means approximately 3.68 kg of CO\u2082. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raw material source:<\/strong> The use of local waste raw materials reduces dependence on primary sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy intensity<\/strong>: Mycelium growth itself occurs at room temperature, which minimizes energy consumption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>End of life<\/strong>: The material is biodegradable and compostable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commercial availability<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By transitioning to continuous and automated processes, MYCO, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/david-%C5%A1ohaj-mina%C5%99%C3%ADk-6210056b\/\">David \u0160ohaj Mina\u0159\u00edk<\/a>, has achieved industrial efficiency, offering a commercially successful and scalable solution for demanding applications. This position is further confirmed by its successful entry into the German market, where the company is already fulfilling its first orders. <\/p>\n\n<p
