This result is driven by a combination of two key factors: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Low energy intensity: <\/strong>Mycelium production is characterized by low emissions (Scope 1 and 2).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sequestered biogenic carbon: <\/strong>Mycelium, the vegetative part of a fungus, grows on lignocellulosic substrates (agricultural residues) and thus <strong>actively sequesters biogenic carbon<\/strong>. This process captures 1.835 kg of CO2 per kilogram of dry mass, which makes the overall balance negative. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When compared with the conventional synthetic materials that mycelium replaces (especially foam plastics like <strong>EPS<\/strong> and <strong>PUR<\/strong>), the differences are dramatic, as these materials are of fossil origin and do not sequester biogenic carbon:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Material<\/th><th>Carbon Footprint<\/th><th>Difference Compared to Mycelium<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Mycelium<\/td><td>\u20131,305 kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e \/ kg<\/td><td>&#8211;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Polystyrene (PS)<\/td><td>+3,68 kg CO<sub>2\u200b<\/sub>e\/kg<\/td><td>+5,00 kg CO2\u200be<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Polyurethane (PUR)<\/td><td>+5,20 kg CO<sub>2\u200b<\/sub>e\/kg<\/td><td>+6,51 kg CO2\u200be<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By switching to mycelium, you can <strong>reduce your product&#8217;s carbon footprint by up to 6.5 kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e\/kg<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emission Audit as a Strategic Advantage for ESG and Compliance<br\/><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing a material with a demonstrably negative footprint is currently the most powerful <br\/><strong>decarbonization lever <\/strong>and a key point for your ESG reporting.
